Enabling Migrant Laborers to be Guest Workers Helpline service for the guest workers

PDS had opened a helpline service for the guest workers during the COVID - 19 pandemic. These migrant guest workers in Kerala have a significant role in the blue collar labor market of Kerala. Many migrant workers rely on sub-agents to facilitate their work. These sub-agents can be family members, friends, and members of the communities where migrant workers come from. A large number of guest workers had gone back to their native as they were left with no jobs during the country's strict lockdown.

Once the lockdown was eased, many of them sought opportunities to return back to work. It is in this phase that Garshom Helpline for Migrant Laborers got the maximum request for job facilitation services. Sulfidhar Ali Mondal was one such laborer who had returned back to his native village in West Bengal. He had worked for 13 years in the construction field before leaving Kerala during the lockdown. But this company windup their operations as the owner of the firm had lost his life to coronavirus. The helpline received a call from Sulfidhar seeking a job in Kerala. He was in a poor state of mind due to financial difficulties. Through the helpline, comforting mental support and an assurance of contacting him for job related updates was given. Communication to various construction companies was passed on to see if any matching vacancies were available to which KMP constructions came forward with a requirement. Sulfidhar was connected to the contractor of KMP constructions where the wage and other benefits were discussed and fixed. He got a daily wage of Rs. 700 and accommodation in the labor camp. The helpline service was a great support to many people like Sulfidhar in getting a dignified job.

Garshom now has a large network of employees where the guest workers can be connected and placed if the requirements match. Garshom’s service of facilitating recruitment through formal agencies not only plays a role to get a dignified job for the migrants but also contributes in reducing the gap of informal work.
