Munshi Murmu, 39, moved to Kerala with her husband and two children in search of a better future. The
family relied mainly on her husband’s income to meet rent, school fees and daily expenses. The
disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic deepened their financial difficulties and pushed the family
into debt.
Through the ESAF Garshom Project, Prachodhan Development Services first supported the education of Munshi’s children, helping reduce the immediate financial burden. The children also received opportunities to participate in skill and enrichment activities, supporting their continued development.
Munshi wanted to contribute to the family’s income and began looking for work. Recognising her circumstances and motivation, the Garshom team guided her through the employment process and supported her application for a position with GramDarsh Integrated Services, part of the ESAF Group’s social initiatives.
Her application was successful, and she secured employment. With a steady source of income, the family is now in a stronger position to manage expenses, save and plan for the future. Munshi’s journey shows how integrated social support and access to livelihood opportunities can help families move from prolonged financial uncertainty towards greater resilience.
