A New Path to Livelihood: Shibani’s Skill Development Journey Skill Development | Udalguri, Assam

Shibani Burh, 21, from Nonaipara village in Udalguri district, lives with a locomotor disability and discontinued formal education after Class 5. Her mother, a daily wage worker, is the family’s sole earner. Limited mobility and few accessible opportunities left Shibani with little scope for skill development or income generation.

Prachodhan, with CSR support from ESAF Small Finance Bank, implemented a 30-day training programme in cutting, knitting and tailoring in her village. Shibani participated consistently and showed strong motivation to learn, developing practical skills through hands-on training and guidance.

She learned to design and stitch garments for women and children, and her work was recognised for quality and creativity among 50 participants. Shibani was awarded Best Trainee of the programme, providing important recognition of her ability and effort.

The training has strengthened her confidence, technical capabilities and aspirations for economic independence. She is now planning to establish a small tailoring unit to generate income and support her family. Her journey demonstrates how inclusive skill-development opportunities can help persons with disabilities build capabilities, confidence and pathways towards greater economic participation.
