From Trainee to Entrepreneur: Seema Builds a Tailoring Livelihood Skill Development | Udalguri, Assam

Seema Orang, a young woman from Udalguri district, aspired to become financially independent and support her family, but limited access to skills and livelihood opportunities prevented her from pursuing income-generating work.

Through Prachodhan Development Services’ Skill Development Training Programme, Seema received practical instruction in cutting, measurement, stitching, finishing and basic business practices. The training strengthened her technical abilities while also building confidence and discipline to take independent initiatives.

After completing the programme, Seema established a small tailoring centre in her locality. She began with blouse stitching, fall-pico work and minor garment repairs, gradually building a customer base through consistent quality and reliable service.

Today, she earns an average monthly income of Rs.3,000–Rs.4,000, contributing to household expenses and improving her family’s financial situation. Seema now hopes to expand her unit by adding sewing machines and training other girls. Her journey demonstrates how practical skills, encouragement and enterprise support can help rural women move towards self-reliance.
