From Training to a Home-Based Enterprise: Mariam’s Mushroom Journey Livelihood Development | Dhekiajuli, Assam

Mariam Tiru, from Naharbari Village in Dhekiajuli Block, belongs to a household dependent on irregular daily wage income. Rising household expenses and the absence of an additional livelihood source created continuing financial pressure for the family.

Mariam joined Prachodhan Development Services’ livelihood development initiative and participated in mushroom cultivation training in 2025. The programme introduced her to mushroom production, market demand and basic business planning, providing practical knowledge that could be applied at household level.

After the training, Mariam established a small mushroom production unit at home and began cultivating and selling mushrooms within her community. The enterprise currently provides an additional monthly income of approximately ₹2,000–₹3,000, helping the family meet household needs more effectively.

Beyond the financial benefit, the experience has increased Mariam’s confidence and encouraged her to consider further livelihood opportunities. She is now planning to expand the unit by cultivating different mushroom varieties. Her journey illustrates how practical training and timely support can help rural women start small, build confidence and gradually strengthen household resilience.
