Small Savings, Big Lessons: The Children of Jhuki Balajyothi | Jhuki, Dumka, Jharkhand

In Jhuki, a tribal settlement in the Benegariya region of Dumka district, 26 children of the Balajyothi Club turned a financial-literacy lesson into a practical exercise in saving and collective responsibility. What began with conversations about money soon became a shared effort to change everyday spending habits.

Through interactive sessions, discussions and piggy-bank activities, the children learned about mindful spending, saving and responsible financial decisions. They began setting aside small amounts of money instead of spending on unnecessary purchases, learning the value of discipline through their own actions.

The children pooled their savings and made a collective decision to purchase club jerseys, strengthening their sense of identity and belonging. They later used their savings to purchase essential study materials for club members, linking financial habits with education and mutual support.

The experience has encouraged other Balajyothi Clubs in the region to explore similar saving practices. The children are now working towards opening individual bank accounts, taking a further step towards formal financial inclusion. Their story shows how age-appropriate financial education can become a practical tool for confidence, responsibility and community action.
