Sonot Soren, 16, is a member of the Sinngaon Balajyothi Club in Udalguri, Assam. Raised by his single
mother, he faced financial and social challenges but remained passionate about hockey. His
participation in Balajyothi activities created a space where his interests could be recognised beyond
academics.
The Balajyothi facilitator noticed Sonot’s enthusiasm for hockey and encouraged him to develop his skills. With regular practice, motivation and support, he improved his performance and gained confidence in his ability to compete at a higher level.
Sonot was subsequently selected to represent the Udalguri District Junior Hockey Team and participated in the All-Assam Junior Men Inter-District Hockey Championship at Missa, Kaliabor, Nagaon. The Udalguri team secured fourth place in the championship.
For Sonot, the experience went beyond a sporting achievement. It created a sense of possibility and recognition, showing the value of supportive spaces where children can discover and develop their talents. His journey reflects Balajyothi’s wider approach to holistic child development through opportunity, encouragement and participation.
